BACK ALLEY ROSE 10X8 2001

This was a charming and awkward painting to create. I happened upon this climbing rose on the front door of this house in Amsterdam. I quickly set about working. The sidewalks aren't wide and I am practically sitting at the door of this residence. Periodically I can see the curtains of a window move. Eventually a little old lady emerges and apologetically wants to see my work. I live for these moments, quickly inviting her on to her sidewalk. It is a lovely feeling to be a welcomed guest, by a stranger, in a foreign land. She makes several appearances as the piece progresses. By the time I have finished, I have met her daughter and several of her neighbors.
