SINAGOGA 20X16 1999

The Jews, Muslims, and Christians coexisted in Spain until 1492 with the Alhambra Decree, and then it got ugly. There are still families with the keys to their forfeited homes all these centuries later. The most visually interesting part of of every Spanish city I visited was the quarters of these minorities. Their influence on the culture, art, and architecture is everywhere. It is haunting to perceive.
In the foreground are posts to protect pedestrians. Painting in Spain was a challenge because I would set up on stairs and a truck would pull straight up them and park. Nowhere was beyond the limits for vehicles in this famously congested city. I witnessed a tourist struck by a vehicle while executing this painting.
