SELF PORTRAIT WITH WALKMAN @ 40X24 ACRYLIC 1983

At 27, I am still finding my feet with paint. Lots of stimuli, including pot and music. I was very prolific. Sleep and diet suffered. For a whole Summer I went without a residence. I would nap during the day and stay up all night. It was against policy to sleep in graduate studios. Security would check at night but never during the day when I would nap. The advent of the personal stereo was amazing. My brother Joe would send me mix tapes to paint by. They were fantastic. Joe Jackson, David Byrne, Phil Collins were my current favorites. My standards were John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, the Doors, and Elvis.

I attach myself to objects. The chair is a good example. It will appear in many paintings. I played with a "Through the Looking Glass" theme here. Headphones on me in the mirror with the walkman on the "other side" in the chair.
